I am designing an A1 poster (at 300 dpi) and am noticing blurriness on a pixel pattern when I export my PSD to PDF.
My methodology for generating the PDF is as follows:
- Flatten the image
- Save as -> PDF
- Options: Do Not Downsample, compression: ZIP
These screenshots are both taken at 100% size.
This is the view when editing in Photoshop.
And this is the output from the PDF
The first concern is that the sizes are not identical, I don't know whether this is Photoshop or Adobe Reader.
The second concern is that the pixel pattern is not sharp and is instead meshed together, am I doing something wrong here?

It's unclear if your issue is the text being blurry or the images. But let's assume your images have the right resolution and were not resized bigger, or didn't lose any quality in that way.
If the texts are blurry, you can cheat and convert your PSD layer file to PDF, and still keep the sharpness of a vector.
From the screenshot that is still visible, it looks like a question of text trapping in Photoshop. You can fix this in 2 ways:
Let Photoshop flatten the layers during the export by checking the 'as a copy' box while you export in PDF.
This way you will keep the 'vector' properties of your text depending on the Photoshop version you use. When you flatten the whole layout before exporting, it rasterizes everything together.
You can keep the same settings for compression as the ones you already mentioned.
The examples below are both screenshots from Acrobat PDF:
Simply save your file in .psd with the layers, and open that file in Illustrator. Choose the 'convert layers to objects' and your text layers from Photoshop will be transformed into vectors.
Now export that PDF with the highest quality setting or no compression at all, and open it again the way you took your screenshots to see if the issue still happens.
If you're satisfied, you can follow these instruction to optimize your PDF to be a smaller file size but retain the same print quality:
If you don't own a license of Illustrator or simply don't want to use it, or you're using an older version of Photoshop, you could try to add some pixels to your trapping on your text. This will hide the anti-aliasing you might see on the final result but it will not improve the quality of your file Some colors don't blend well together and this will at least hide a bit the effect of anti-aliasing between the colors. It doesn't do miracles and your text and whole layout will still be a raster image.
To do this, go on the menu 'image' and select 'trap'. In this box, add 1 or 2 pixels of trapping. Usually 2 gives good results.
Don't forget to keep another version of your Photoshop with layers; trapping like this will require your to flatten your file and you also need to be in CMYK color mode!
This is slightly destructive, it's good for some situations but if you can, it's better to convert your PDF to vector or use the first option above.
Acrobat doesn't open by default at 100% or fit to page; it depends on your preferences or the setting in the PDF as well. But you seem to have understood this already.
One reason why your PDF could look like being a different size than the Photoshop is the resolution set in the Adobe Acrobat Preferences.
Depending on what you have there, the 'real size' of your PDF will vary on the screen. It's also normal
For example, the example below are the exact same PDF at 500% in Acrobat. The example on the right is using 72ppi display resolution in Acrobat and the one on the left is using 101ppi. I'm not certain but I think by default it's possible your page display is set to the system setting.
If you want to see the exact same size in Acrobat and Photoshop, and that your Photoshop file is a 300ppi, try to insert 300ppi in the Acrobat resolution setting. The 2 documents should be shown at the same size.

Dec 31, 2013I'm editing a lot of files for web publishing. These files need to be saved as PNG files but I would like to be able to quickly keep a copy of the PDN file so that I can quickly edit the files if needed since I can't save an image with layers to a PNG without flattening first.
Is there a plugin that allows me to quickly do this? Perhaps a checkbox on the Save As.. dialog to automatically save a copy of the file as a PDN to a designated location? Having to manually save each file twice is quite tedious.

Is there a way to automatically save layers as separate image files from a Paint.NET (
pdn
) file?For example, if I have 5 layers in a

Paint.NET doesn't seem to be able to do this natively. Take a look at the utilities on this page:

Specifically,
pdn2png
can save each layer into a separate file with the /split
option, like so:Alternatively, for something with a graphical interface, try this:

I did a quick test with a 2-layer PDN file, and both seem to work as advertised.

Unfortunatelly Layer Saver from this link http://forums.getpaint.net/index.php?showtopic=9704 does NOT work with Paint.Net 4.0 and above. But pdn2png from http://comsquare.dynvpn.de/forums/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=64&sid=871b9b812347c2a654cf00cb1e02352c works well!

This is a bit laborious but it works:
- Uncheck all but the first layer.
- Save as .png file in a convenient folder.
- Undo the 'flatten image' to restore all layers.
- Uncheck all but the next layer and repeat steps 2 & 3.
- Repeat for all layers.
You will now have all individual layers saved as .png files which can be re-imported into a new Paint.net image as required.

There is also another plugin which adds a file type, a zip file containing all the layers and some additional data.
To use it, extract the the provided zip and copy the dll into FileTypes folder in Paint.Net's installation directory (don't forget to restart Paint.Net). Then you can save as your .pdn files as a .zip file (choose 'ZIP - Compressed Archive of Layers' for 'Save as type' in the 'Save As' dialog). The saved zip file will contain all the layers.

I'm more comfortable with resizing/cropping images in Paint.NET. My wife needs to submit a portrait for something and the requirements are a 3x5 300 DPI JPG or TIFF in CMYK. I can handle the size and resolution, but I have no clue how to save an image as CMYK. I'm clueless enough that I don't even know if 'save image as CMYK' is the wrong thing to ask.
I found a Paint .NET plugin that seems like it does separation, but it doesn't mention if it saves the image so it is a CMYK image. I found an article about similar GIMP plugins but I'm still not sure if it's right.
I've got a 300 DPI bitmap appropriately sized and I'm assuming it's in RGB since I haven't fiddled with anything. Is there a free, easy process by which I can turn this into a JPG/TIFF with the CMYK color space?

I'm not at all familiar with Paint .NET. However RGB and CMYK are both color models. A lot of programs have a setting that allows you to change which color mode you are using. But after I Googled around a bit I found out that Paint .NET doesn't support CMYK (or at least not on its own).
GIMP, another free image-editing software also doesn't support CMYK directly but it does offer plug-ins. On their wiki about CMYK support they mention:
CMYK color model (or CMYK mode) is used mostly by DTP professionals that need to output images intended for commercial printing. For an average home user or even professional photographers, support for separating images using CMYK color is not necessary.
Even when you see Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black cartridges in your ink-jet or color laser printer, it doesn't mean that you need to feed it a CMYK file. In fact, most of them actually accept only RGB images or convert CMYK images to RGB internally.
Alternatively there are some online tools that can convert images for you.A google search on the matter may return additional resources.

You can't. Paint.net is RGB only.
GIMP is an RGB editor as well..no native CMYK support.
PhotoShop is your best best bet for CMYK support.
All that said, I bet you it doesn't matter. They can likely handle an RGB JPG just fine and they likely just didn't have someone all that knowledgeable write up the spec.
